Transportation in Hong Kong

Travelling to and from the Airport

Airport Express (MTR)The Airport Express takes approximately 24 minutes to reach Hong Kong Island. More information on the Airport Express can be found here.

Bus
Airbuses and city buses operate between the airport and key locations around Hong Kong. Bus stops can be found on the right after exiting the Arrivals Hall.

Taxi
The taxi pick-up area is located in front of the Arrivals Hall.

MTR

The MTR (Mass Transit Railway) is the railway system in Hong Kong, with stations within walking distance in most major locations and frequent trains.
 
The main form of payment is octopus card, however tickets can be purchased in stations with cash. Most stations also accept Alipay, WeChat Pay and Union Pay.

Buses and Minibuses

Bus
There are four major bus franchises in Hong Kong:
Kowloon Motor Bus and Citybus provide services in Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and New Territories. 
New Lantau Bus and Long Win Bus operate on Lantau Island. Payment is accepted by Octopus card or exact change.

Minibuses
Minibuses are small buses with a maximum capacity of 19 people. Green minibuses operate on specific routes, while red minibuses operate on non-fixed routes and stop anywhere along the route. Some familiarity with Hong Kong is helpful when travelling via minibus. Payment is accepted by Octopus card or exact change.

Taxi

There are three types of taxis in Hong Kong: Red taxis operate throughout most of Hong Kong.Blue taxis only operate on Lantau Island.Green taxis only operate in the New Territories. 

Taxis can be hailed on the street or on the HKTaxi app. Fares are recorded on a taximeter, and fare information including surcharges will be listed inside the taxi. The main form of payment is cash, however some taxis may accept Octopus card, Alipay and credit cards

Tram

Trams operate in Hong Kong Island, along the Western District, Wanchai, Happy Valley, Causeway Bay and North Point. They are a historic part of Hong Kong and a popular tourist attraction. 

Payment is accepted by Octopus card or exact change at the end of the journey. More information can be found here.

Star Ferry

The Star Ferry transports passengers across the Victoria Harbour between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. Operating between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui, it offers a view of the harbour and is also a popular tourist attraction.​
​
Passengers can pay by Octopus card or coins.
